Lock rekeying in Seattle
Rekeying changes the inside of your existing locks, so old keys stop working and a new key opens them. We rekey locks at your door in Seattle and nearby cities.
Rekey or replace?
If your locks work well, rekeying keeps them on the door and changes only the inside. If a lock is worn, damaged or easy to defeat, replacing it makes more sense. Ask us which fits each door when you call.
How rekeying works
Inside a pin tumbler lock, small pins of different lengths line up only with the right key. Rekeying replaces those pins with a new set, so the lock works with a new key and every old key stops working. The lock body and the hardware on the door stay the same.
After moving in
When to rekey
- You moved into a home or an apartment.
- A roommate, tenant or employee left with a key.
- A key was lost or stolen.
- After a break-in or an attempted one.
- Contractors, cleaners or a dog walker had a copy you can’t account for.
Can every lock be rekeyed?
Most pin tumbler locks can, and that covers the usual knobs, levers and deadbolts on homes. Some high-security locks use restricted keys that only an authorized dealer can supply, and a worn or damaged lock is better replaced. We check each lock on site.
Master key systems
For buildings and businesses we set up master key systems: each key opens only the doors it should, and a master key opens them all. See commercial locksmith.
