Repair the lock or change it?

We repair locks, and we change them for new ones when they can’t be fixed or you want a stronger lock.

Signs a lock needs attention

  • The key sticks, needs jiggling or only turns at a certain angle.
  • The deadbolt has to be pushed, lifted or slammed to line up with the door frame.
  • The handle or knob is loose, or turns without opening the latch.
  • The lock was damaged in a break-in or an attempted break-in.

Keeping locks working

Use a lubricant made for locks, such as a dry graphite or PTFE spray, a couple of times a year; household oil and grease collect dirt and make sticking worse. If a key gets harder to turn, call before it breaks off inside the lock.

Broken key extraction

If a key snaps inside a lock, don’t try to dig it out with a screwdriver or a pin: that pushes the piece deeper and damages the pins. We extract the broken piece and, if the lock was damaged, rekey or replace it.

After a break-in

If a lock was damaged, we replace it. If keys may have been taken, rekeying the rest of the house makes those keys useless.

Questions

Do you replace locks after a break-in?

Yes. We replace damaged locks so the door locks properly again. If keys may have been taken, rekeying the other locks makes those keys stop working.
