Keys locked in the trunk?
First check whether the doors are still unlocked. If they are, the trunk release inside the car may open it.

Then we open the car first and the trunk after, where it is parked.
Car lockoutsThe trunk won't open even with the key?
A dead fob battery or a worn trunk latch is the usual cause. We repair and replace trunk locks at the car.
When the trunk won't openSomeone is trapped inside the trunk?
Call 911 now. Cars made for the US since the 2002 model year also have a glow-in-the-dark release handle inside the trunk.
How it happens
You put the shopping in, set the keys down for a second, and close the lid. Some cars lock themselves a few moments later, and the keys are now behind two locks instead of one.
Before you call
- Are the doors unlocked? Most cars have a trunk release inside: a button or lever by the driver’s seat, on the dashboard or in the driver’s door.
- Do the rear seats fold down? On many sedans the seat backs release from inside the car and give you a way into the trunk.
- A spare key or a phone app? A spare fob at home, or the manufacturer’s app, may open the trunk remotely.
If the doors are locked too, or none of this works, call us.
What we do
We come to wherever the car is parked, check that you are authorized to access the vehicle, and open it, then the trunk. If the trunk lock or latch turns out to be damaged, we can repair or replace it during the same visit.
When the trunk won’t open
- The fob battery is dead. The trunk button on the fob stops working first. Many fobs hide a metal key inside for the door, but many trunks have no keyhole.
- The latch or lock is worn or damaged. The button clicks but the lid stays shut, or the key turns without releasing it. We repair and replace trunk locks.
- The trunk was forced. After a break-in the lock is often damaged and the lid may not close properly: have the lock replaced before you drive with valuables inside. Door locks too: see car locksmith.
Someone trapped inside
If a person or a pet is locked in a trunk or a car, call 911 first. Cars made for the US since the 2002 model year have an internal trunk release, usually a handle that glows in the dark, so someone inside can open the lid.
